The eastern coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province has invested heavily to build more higher quality community-based public sports facilities, promote major sporting events and competitive sports, and develop the city’s sports industry over the past five years, said local officials.
During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), Qingdao invested a total of about 300 million yuan ($46.47 million) to build fitness facilities, parks and playgrounds across the city.

According to Qingdao officials, all residents in the city’s urban areas are within eight minutes of a sports venue, while all rural residents also enjoy relatively easy access to such facilities.
In 2020 alone, the city built 102 multi-functional sports venues, mainly free-standing football mini pitches, renovated 600 fitness facilities, and opened 104 parks.
During the pandemic and the nationwide lockdown, Qingdao launched a home-based fitness initiative to boost the fitness level of local citizens and improve their health. The city recommended one indoor fitness program to the public every day and offered online lectures, TV programs and public health hot lines to help people exercise at home.Lots of people buy some fitness online, such as treadmill,dumbbell,etc.
Qingdao has been making steady efforts to boost local sporting event brands and has been hosting a series of large-scale fitness activities for more than 20 years, including the community fitness festival, mountain climbing festival and the Qingdao International Sailing Week and Qingdao International Marine Festival.
Each year, the city hosts thousands of sports and fitness activities to engage more people and promote fitness awareness.
Hailed as the “sailing capital of China,” the city has continued to serve as a gathering ground for sailing professionals and spectators in recent years by hosting world-class sailing events.
In addition to Olympic sailing events and Extreme Sailing Series, the city also hosted the Clipper Round the World Race, Volvo Ocean Race, ISAF Sailing World Cup and other internationally esteemed sailing events.
The city has also made efforts to standardize the construction and management of its sports associations.
At present, the city has 66 municipal-level sports associations, 473 municipal-level sports clubs, 202 district-level associations, 537 district-level clubs and 103 township associations. In addition, 116 administrative villages have set up sports associations.
